BIM and Italy’s New Public Procurement Code
By Nir Sivan – Founder, Nir Sivan Architects
With the new Italian Procurement Code, the use of BIM (Building Information Modeling) will soon become mandatory in public tenders. This shift aligns Italy with international standards and addresses a long-standing delay in the construction sector’s digital transformation—especially when compared to industries like automotive or naval engineering.
As an architect with over 15 years of BIM experience, I’ve often been approached by professionals looking to transition from traditional CAD to BIM. The shift may seem daunting, but in reality, BIM simplifies the design process, making it more accurate, efficient, and collaborative.
BIM allows us to virtually build the project before construction begins, integrating all technical and architectural information into a single model. This minimizes errors, improves coordination among teams, and allows clients to visualize the outcome from the very beginning.
Italy’s move toward mandatory BIM is not just a legal update—it’s a necessary leap forward in restoring the country’s leadership in innovation, quality, and intelligent design.
