3D-PRINTED MOCKUP, REUT HEART

The gridshell canopy of REUT Heart, sculpted by hand in virtual reality and tested as a 3D-printed lattice on its site model.

3D-PRINTED MOCKUP, REUT HEART

Project

The canopy of REUT Heart, a covered public piazza near Jerusalem, was not drawn: Nir Sivan sculpted it by hand in virtual reality, immersed in the digital model with a headset, with a plasticity and freedom that conventional CAD tools do not allow. The 3D-printed lattice is the physical proof of that gesture.

Printed in white as a triangulated shell with its two openings, the model stands on its board and on the white site model, between the surrounding buildings, with the round mirror of the pool beneath it. Each print was a test: of the double curvature, of the span, of how the shell meets the existing buildings, and of the structure that LANIK would later engineer for fabrication.

The prints sit next to the tablet with the digital model: the same form, once in the hand and once on the screen. The method is the studio’s own: sculpt first, then engineer to be built.

The project: REUT Heart social gathering, Israel.
