Rome Future Week 2026 · “Abitare il Futuro”, Smart Cities session · Palazzo Orsini Taverna, Rome · 25 September 2026

“They asked me to cover a car park.” That is how Onda Carioca began, in Rio de Janeiro in 2014, and how I opened my talk on smart cities at Rome Future Week. The canopy cost about 5% of the total investment, design and construction included, and gave the whole CasaShopping complex its identity. Today it is its official symbol.

A city is smart when everyone wins

My thesis is simple: a city is intelligent when three parties win together. Those who invest need a return, clear rules and certain times. Citizens are the real client: the people who live the city. And nature, meaning flora, fauna, water and shade, is not decoration but infrastructure, for today and for whoever lives there tomorrow. The public administration is the director: it does not have to build everything, it has to make sure all three win.

A precious lesson from Toronto

Even Google tried to build the perfect city. What it taught us is that a city cannot be installed. It grows, together with the people who live in it.

Designing for the present

We must know how to plan, but planning is what we do while life goes by. The present is the only moment of real power. So the real future is a winning system that can evolve, because it keeps listening to all its parts. Everything arises from causes and conditions, and everything changes.

Rome already has the tools

Rome received the Smart City Award 2025 at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. Roma5G brings connectivity to more than 100 squares and transport hubs, and the ROAD district in Ostiense is building a digital twin of the city. The next challenge, and a beautiful one, is to make systems, data and projects talk to each other.

Three ideas for Rome

Design to evolve. Modular, reversible, adaptable: a project lasts because it can change.

Public data, one direction. Platforms that talk to each other, open to citizens and investors.

Every project declares how each party wins. Investors, citizens, nature: three indicators, always.

A smart city is not imposed. It learns, adapts and lasts.

Ogni progetto dichiara come vince ciascuna parte. Investitori, cittadini, natura: tre indicatori, sempre.

Una città smart non si impone. Impara, si adatta e dura.

Rome Future Week 2026 · FabLab Lazio, Lazio Innova Spazio Attivo Roma Casilina · 22 September 2026

At Rome Future Week my studio was one of two real business cases studied by international students of IES Abroad Rome, in a morning session on strategic marketing and innovation at FabLab Lazio. The students analysed our value proposition, positioning, clients and acquisition channels, then proposed how we could grow.

Architecture with an identity

I work where architecture, sculpture, design and digital experimentation meet. The question behind every project is how an artistic idea becomes a functional space with its own identity. Onda Carioca at CasaShopping in Rio de Janeiro brings a wave of glass and steel into a commercial setting; Reut Heart explores how a sculptural canopy can bring public life, social interaction and retail together.

Our clients are developers, shopping-centre owners, hospitality businesses, private homeowners, cultural organisations and public bodies: people who want a destination, a space that expresses who they are, a project that people remember.

What makes a client choose?

I expected most proposals to focus on showing creativity: better photographs, videos, sketches, the design process. These matter. But I asked the students to challenge the idea that artistic ability is enough to win a commission.

Most developers want to see revenue and a return on investment. Cultural value and composition persuade them when they help attract buyers, tenants or visitors, support prices or strengthen a destination. The question is how design creates value for their business.

Reputation matters too, sometimes as much as a client’s own judgement. Imagine two proposals of equal quality, one by an unknown architect, one by an architect endorsed by respected publications and trusted contacts. Would the client judge them equally? The design has not changed; the perceived value of its author has.

My last example was Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian, a banana taped to a wall. An edition sold at Sotheby’s in November 2024 for $6.24 million with fees, together with a signed certificate of authenticity. Its value lies in authorship, recognition and ownership, far beyond materials or craftsmanship.

The question for my studio

Architecture must work and be delivered reliably. How do I build the credibility and recognition that make clients actively want a project by me, and understand the value it creates? This site, and this journal, are part of the answer.

Rome Future Week 2026 · FabLab Lazio, Lazio Innova Spazio Attivo Roma Casilina · 22 settembre 2026
